Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère or Cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg optional
  • Fresh parsley chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven: Set to 375°F (190°C).
  • Prepare cream mixture: In a saucepan, melt butter. Add garlic, cream, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Simmer 2–3 minutes.
  • Layer potatoes: Arrange half of sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half the cream mixture over. Sprinkle 1 cup Gruyère.
  • Add second layer: Place remaining potatoes. Pour remaining cream. Top with remaining cheese and Parmesan.
  • Bake: Cover with foil and bake 35 minutes. Remove foil and bake 15 minutes more until golden.
  • Rest: Let sit 5 minutes before serving.
  • Garnish: Sprinkle fresh parsley on top.

Notes

  1. Slice potatoes evenly for uniform cooking.
  2. Use a mandoline for quick, thin slices.
  3. Don’t overpour cream; sauce should coat, not drown, potatoes.
  4. Let dish rest to thicken the sauce before serving.
  5. Add a pinch of cayenne for subtle heat.
