Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 1 small onion grated
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oil

For the gravy:

  • 1 onion sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Meat Mixture

  • In a large bowl, add ground beef, grated onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, and milk. Mix gently using your hands. Do not overmix. Add salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Combine everything until soft and slightly sticky.

Shape the Patties

  • Take the meat mixture and divide it into equal parts. Shape each part into oval patties. Keep them slightly thick so they stay juicy while cooking. Place them on a plate and let them rest for a few minutes.

Heat the Pan

  • Place a large skillet on medium heat. Add oil and let it warm up slowly. Make sure the pan is not too hot. A gentle heat helps cook the patties evenly without burning the outside.
  • Cook the Patties
  • Add the patties to the pan carefully. Cook each side for about 4–5 minutes. Turn them gently using a spatula. Cook until they are brown and cooked through. Remove them and set aside on a plate.

Cook the Onions for Gravy

  • In the same pan, add sliced onions. Cook them until soft and golden. Stir often so they do not burn. These onions will give your gravy a deep, sweet flavor.

Make the Gravy Base

  • Add butter to the onions and let it melt. Sprinkle flour and stir well. Cook this mixture for one minute. This step helps thicken the gravy later.

Add Broth and Flavor

  • Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring. Add soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for a few minutes until it thickens. Stir gently to keep the texture smooth.

Return Patties to the Pan

  • Place the cooked patties back into the gravy. Spoon some gravy over them. Let everything simmer together for 8–10 minutes. This helps the flavors blend beautifully.

Serve Warm

  • Turn off the heat and let the dish rest for a minute. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice. Spoon extra gravy on top for a perfect finish.

Notes

  • Use ground beef with 15–20% fat for juicy patties
  • Add mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor
  • Replace breadcrumbs with crushed crackers
  • Add a pinch of paprika for a smoky taste
  • Use chicken broth if beef broth is not available
