Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Aluminum foil or parchment paper
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Pastry brush
  • Tongs

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs chicken wings tips removed and drumettes separated
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce preferably a Dallas-style BBQ sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes optional
  • Fresh cilantro chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  • Season Wings: Pat the chicken wings dry with paper towels. Season with salt and pepper and arrange them in a single layer on the baking sheet.
  • Initial Bake: Bake the wings for 25 minutes, then flip and continue baking for another 20 minutes until they are nearly fully cooked and slightly crispy.
  • Make the Sauce: While the wings are baking, mix the barbecue sauce, honey, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and red chili flakes in a bowl.
  • Coat the Wings: Remove the wings from the oven and increase the temperature to 425°F (220°C). Toss the wings in the sauce mixture until evenly coated.
  • Final Bake: Return the coated wings to the baking sheet and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and caramelized.
  • Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with chopped cilantro and sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • Spicy Kick: Add more red chili flakes or a splash of hot sauce to the BBQ mixture for extra heat.
  • Sweet Twist: Mix in a tablespoon of brown sugar or maple syrup to the sauce for deeper sweetness.
  • Smokey Flavor: A teaspoon of liquid smoke will intensify the BBQ smokiness.
  • Herbal Notes: Add dried thyme or oregano for an aromatic touch.
  • Gluten-Free Option: To adapt this recipe for a gluten-free diet, opt for tamari or a certified gluten-free soy sauce.
