Equipment

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Stove
  • Glass jar or bottle for storage

Ingredients

  • 1 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sesame oil
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger grated
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch dissolved in 2 tablespoons water
  • Add 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes if you prefer a spicier touch this is optional.

Instructions

  • Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, mix together soy sauce, water, sesame oil, sugar, minced garlic, and grated ginger.
  • Heat Mixture: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently to dissolve the sugar.
  • Thicken Sauce: Add the cornstarch mixture to the saucepan, whisking continuously to prevent any lumps. Let it simmer for 3 to 4 minutes, or just until the sauce begins to thicken.
  • Add Heat: If using, stir in the red pepper flakes for an extra kick.
  • Cooling and Storage: Take the sauce off the heat and give it time to cool down. Transfer the sauce to a glass jar or bottle and refrigerate until needed.

Notes

  1. Adjust Sweetness: Depending on your taste, adjust the amount of sugar up or down.
  2. For optimal taste: always opt for fresh garlic and ginger.
  3. Proper Storage: Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  4. Serving Suggestion: Great with rice bowls, grilled meats, or as a dipping sauce.
  5. Experiment: Don't hesitate to tweak the heat level with more or less red pepper flakes.
