Ingredients

  • 8 fresh tomatillos husks removed
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups chicken broth or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • 1 tablespoon flour or cornstarch optional, for thicker sauce

Instructions

Roast the Vegetables

  • Place tomatillos, green chilies, onion, and garlic on a baking tray. Drizzle olive oil over them. Roast until soft and lightly charred. This step builds rich flavor and gives the sauce its lovely smoky taste.

Blend Until Smooth

  • Transfer roasted vegetables into a blender. Add cilantro, cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, and broth. Blend until very smooth. The color should look fresh and green. The smell will already make your kitchen feel amazing.

Cook the Sauce

  • Pour the blended sauce into a saucepan. Heat over medium flame. Stir gently as it cooks. Let it simmer for about ten minutes. This helps all flavors mix beautifully and become rich and balanced.

Adjust Thickness

  • If the sauce feels thin, mix flour or cornstarch with a little water. Stir it into the sauce. Cook for two minutes more. This creates a silky texture that coats enchiladas perfectly without becoming too heavy.

Finish with Lime

  • Add fresh lime juice at the end. Stir well. Taste the sauce and adjust salt if needed. The lime lifts every flavor. Now your Homemade Green Enchilada Sauce Recipe is fresh, bold, and ready.

Notes

  • Roast vegetables until lightly blackened for smoky flavor.
  • Add jalapeƱo for extra heat.
  • Use vegetable broth for a vegetarian version.
  • Blend longer for extra smooth sauce.
  • Add a spoon of sour cream for creamy sauce.
  • A pinch of sugar balances tart tomatillos.
  • Fresh cilantro gives the best fresh taste.
