Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 cups Granny Smith apples peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup water

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted or cubed cold

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Let it heat up while you prepare the fruit. Lightly grease your baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.

Prepare the Apples

  • Wash, peel, and core your apples carefully. Slice them into even wedges about half an inch thick. Even slices help the fruit cook at the same rate.

Season the Fruit

  • Place the sliced apples into your large mixing bowl. Add the white sugar, one tablespoon of flour, and cinnamon. Toss everything until the apples are well coated.

Arrange in Dish

  • Spread the seasoned apples into the prepared 9x13 baking dish. Pour the half cup of water evenly over the fruit. The water helps create a saucy filling.

Mix Dry Topping

  • In a separate medium bowl, combine the oats and flour. Add the brown sugar, baking powder, and baking soda. Stir them together until no large clumps remain.

Incorporate the Butter

  • Add the butter to the dry oat mixture. Use a pastry cutter or forks to work it in. The mixture should look like coarse, crumbly sand.

Add the Topping

  • Sprinkle the oat mixture over the apples in the dish. Cover the fruit completely from corner to corner. Do not press the topping down too hard.

Bake Until Golden

  • Place the dish in the center of the oven. Bake for about 45 minutes. The topping should be golden brown and the apples should bubble.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove the dish from the oven carefully. Let it sit for 10 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to thicken up a bit.

Notes

  • Mix Your Apples: Use half Granny Smith and half Honeycrisp for better flavor.
  • Add Nuts: Stir in 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts for extra crunch.
  • Spice it Up: Add a pinch of nutmeg or cloves to the apple mixture.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Use certified gluten-free oats and a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
  • Extra Topping: If you love the crunch, double the topping ingredients for a thicker layer.
  • Butter Temperature: For a more "biscuit" style top, use melted butter instead of cold chunks.
