Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Dough hook
  • Stand mixer (optional, but helpful)
  • Baking tray
  • Pastry brush
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm milk
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 egg beaten
  • Additional melted butter for brushing

Instructions

  • Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  • Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk, melted butter, and beaten egg.
  • Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the Dough: Use a dough hook attachment on your mixer or your hands to knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Shape Rolls: Punch down the dough, then divide and shape it into rolls. Place the rolls on a greased baking tray.
  • Second Rise: Cover the rolls and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
  • Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Butter Topping: Brush the freshly baked rolls with melted butter immediately after taking them out of the oven.

Notes

  • Temperature Matters: Ensure your milk is warm but not too hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Do Not Over-knead: Over-kneading can make the rolls tough. Stop when the dough is smooth.
  • Proper Proofing: Allow the dough to properly rise until doubled; this ensures light and fluffy rolls.
  • Oven Consistency: Use an oven thermometer to make sure your oven is at the correct temperature.
  • Butter Generously: Don’t skimp on buttering the rolls before and after baking for that signature Logan’s taste.
