Ingredients

  • 4 cups cooked green beans fresh or frozen
  • 1 can 10.75 oz condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup diced yellow onions
  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups French fried onions
  • 1/2 cup sliced water chestnuts optional for crunch
  • 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce

Instructions

Preheat Your Oven

  • Start by setting your oven to 350°F. This ensures the oven is hot when your dish is ready. Lightly grease your 9x13 inch baking dish. This prevents the cheese from sticking to the sides. Use a little butter or cooking spray for this.

Prepare the Green Beans

  • If using fresh beans, boil them until they are tender. Drain the water well using a colander. For frozen beans, thaw them and pat them dry. Dry beans help keep the sauce thick and creamy. Wet beans can make the dish watery.

Mix the Creamy Sauce

  • In a large bowl, combine the mushroom soup and melted butter. Stir in the soy sauce, salt, and black pepper. Add the diced yellow onions to this mixture. Stir until the sauce looks smooth and even. The smell will be amazing already.

Add Cheese and Beans

  • Fold the green beans into the creamy soup mixture. Add the grated cheddar cheese and water chestnuts now. Stir gently so you do not break the beans. Make sure every bean is coated in the rich sauce.

Transfer to Baking Dish

  • Pour the mixture into your prepared baking dish. Use a spoon to spread it out evenly. Ensure the corners are filled so it cooks at the same rate. It should look colorful and very rich at this stage.

First Bake Cycle

  • Place the dish in the center of the oven. Bake for about 20 to 25 minutes. The edges should start to bubble. This step cooks the onions inside and melts the cheese. The kitchen will start to smell like a holiday.

Add the Crunchy Topping

  • Take the dish out of the oven carefully. Sprinkle the French fried onions over the top. Cover the entire surface for maximum crunch. Return the dish to the oven for 5 more minutes. Watch them closely so they do not burn.

Cool and Serve

  • Remove the casserole once the onions are golden brown. Let it sit for 5 minutes before serving. This allows the sauce to thicken up perfectly. Serve it warm to your hungry guests and enjoy the praise.

Notes

  • Add Bacon: Stir in crumbled bacon for a smoky flavor.
  • Fresh Mushrooms: Sauté fresh mushrooms instead of using canned soup.
  • Spice it Up: Add a dash of hot sauce for a tiny kick.
  • Low Fat: Use low-sodium soup and reduced-fat cheese if preferred.
  • Make it Ahead: Assemble the dish a day early and keep it in the fridge.
  • Topping Swap: Use crushed Ritz crackers and butter instead of fried onions.
  • Extra Cheese: You can sprinkle extra cheese on top with the onions.
