Equipment

  • Deep fryer or large heavy-bottomed pot
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rolling Pin
  • Pastry cutter or knife
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Serving Plates

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Your choice of ice cream vanilla, chocolate, or cinnamon
  • Honey or powdered sugar for garnishing

Instructions

  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add Shortening: Work the vegetable shortening into the flour mixture using your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Incorporate Water: Gradually add warm water and stir until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough until smooth, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Roll Out Dough: Roll the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut into 4-inch squares or triangles.
  • Heat Oil: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  • Fry Sopapillas: Fry the dough pieces in batches, turning once, until puffed up and golden brown, about 2 minutes on each side.
  • Draining: Use a slotted spoon to carefully lift the sopapillas out of the oil and place them on paper towels to absorb any excess grease.
  • Serve: Serve warm topped with a scoop of your favorite ice cream and a drizzle of honey or a sprinkle of powdered sugar.

Notes

  1. Chocolate-Dipped: Dip half of each sopapilla in melted chocolate for a decadent twist.
  2. Fruit Topped: Top with fresh berries or a fruit compote before adding ice cream.
  3. Nutty Flavor: Sprinkle chopped nuts over the ice cream for added crunch and flavor.
  4. Spicy Twist: Add a pinch of cinnamon or chili powder to the dough for a subtle spice.
  5. Sweet Sauces: Serve with chocolate or caramel sauce for extra indulgence.
