Ingredients

For the Fish

  • 4 white fish fillets
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

For the Beer Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 cup cold beer
  • 1 egg

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil for frying

Optional Serving Items

  • Lemon wedges
  • French fries
  • Tartar sauce
  • Coleslaw

Instructions

Prepare the Fish

  • Pat the fish fillets dry using paper towels. Season with salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Let them rest for ten minutes. Dry fish helps the batter stick better during frying.

Mix the Dry Batter Ingredients

  • Take a large bowl and add flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix everything well using a whisk. This creates a flavorful and crispy coating.

Add the Beer and Egg

  • Crack one egg into the bowl. Slowly pour in the cold beer. Whisk gently until smooth. Do not overmix the batter. Small lumps are completely fine here.

Heat the Oil

  • Pour oil into a deep pan or pot. Heat the oil to medium-high temperature. Test by dropping little batter inside. If it bubbles quickly, the oil is ready.

Coat the Fish

  • Dip each fish fillet into the batter carefully. Make sure every side gets fully coated. Lift gently and allow extra batter to drip off before frying.

Fry the Fish

  • Place battered fish into hot oil slowly. Fry for about four minutes per side. The coating should turn golden and crispy. Avoid flipping too early during cooking.

Drain the Fish

  • Remove the fried fish using tongs carefully. Place them on paper towels or a wire rack. This keeps the outside crispy and prevents extra oiliness.

Serve Fresh and Hot

  • Serve the crispy fish immediately with fries, lemon wedges, and tartar sauce. The crunchy coating tastes best while still hot and fresh from the fryer.

Notes

  • Use ice-cold beer for extra crispy batter.
  • Dry fish fillets before coating.
  • Cod and haddock work best for frying.
  • Add cayenne pepper for spicy flavor.
  • Replace beer with sparkling water if needed.
  • Do not overcrowd the frying pan.
  • Use fresh oil for clean flavor.
  • Serve immediately for maximum crispiness.
  • Add fresh parsley for color and freshness.
  • Try sweet potato fries on the side.
